Captains Raise Concerns Over Impact Player Rule
Tekkabuzz999 At the customary pre-season captains’ meeting held at the BCCI headquarters, a majority of the 10 franchise captains expressed reservations about continuing with the Impact Player rule. During the discussion, one of the senior-most captains voiced concerns, which were strongly supported by several others in what was the first all-Indian captains’ gathering ahead of an IPL season.
IPL Stands Firm Until 2027
Despite calls to review the rule and return to the traditional 11-a-side format, IPL and BCCI officials made it clear that any reassessment would only take place after the 2027 season. While they acknowledged concerns about an uneven playing field and the potential negative impact on the development of Indian allrounders, the authorities confirmed that the rule will remain in effect for the foreseeable future.
Impact on Game Balance and Other Suggestions
Introduced in 2023, the Impact Player rule allows teams to substitute a player at any stage of a match, often enabling sides to swap a batter for a specialist bowler or vice versa. This has significantly altered team balance and reduced the role of allrounders. Meanwhile, a suggestion was made to allow a ball change midway through the second innings to counter heavy dew, but officials rejected it, stating that the current provisions already address such conditions in the later stages of matches.
